History

On Sunday, June 15, 1952, a small group of men and women from the Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church felt that they could better serve God by bringing about another fellowship. As a result of this movement the Second Olivet Missionary Baptist Church was born. The late Rev. Henry Jackson presided over the meeting and the organization of the church. Rev. Jackson also delivered the first sermon. The same afternoon the Rev. Willie S. Stamps was called as the first pastor and remained pastor for 50 years until his retirement on October 13, 2002.

All of the eleven charter members are deceased. One original member remains in the personage of Sis. Melvin Dickerson.

The first home of Second Olivet was 5200 Dubois; the next was 2759 Charlevoix. As the church grew more room was needed and the church moved to 4245 Riopelle.

The Lord blessed and the present location of 2927 West Warren Avenue was purchased on November 12, 1955. With much gratitude to God Almighty, the mortgage was burned in 1972.

The Lord has been a mighty deliverer through good times and bad. His Hand of guidance and mercy has allowed Second Olivet to stand as a saving station of Christian love and fellowship.

After the retirement of Pastor Stamps, God sent Second Olivet a pastor after His own heart in the Rev. Keith L. Nelson. Rev. Nelson was installed on Sunday, October 5, 2003.

Under the spirit-led, dynamic, and visionary leadership of Pastor Nelson, Second Olivet continues its growth as a saving station to the lost.  His life focused verse of: “To whom much is given much is required” has become an encouragement to Second Olivet.
